The Power of the Standout Look

Why We Need to Let Go of Expected Style

I took a client shopping recently for two major milestones on her calendar: her daughter’s graduation dinner and a friend’s 50th birthday.

As her stylist, I curated a variety of options, leaning heavily into suiting alongside a few dresses.

The suiting including rich velvet and a striking white suit looked phenomenal on her, offering incredible versatility and future rewear options.

While the dresses were lovely, they simply didn’t tell her full story.

The white suit, on the other hand, absolutely knocked it out of the park.

It proclaimed, “Here I am a confident 40+ woman.”

The Hidden Pressure to Blend In

Here was the most telling part of the day.

My client initially felt a heavy internal and external pressure to opt for the dresses simply because they were expected.

As a 40+ busy professional mum who typically defaults to wearing black, she felt the pull toward subtlety.

But we hit pause, talked through her style goals, and tried on the suit again.

She ultimately chose the white suit.

It was far and away the standout look.

I couldn’t have been prouder of her for choosing it and resisting the pressure to shrink back into the background.

Redefining How We Present Ourselves

This experience served as a powerful reminder of how subtle the societal messaging around women’s presentation can be.

We are so often conditioned to blend in rather than stand out.

When women are given a choice and when a stylist introduces looks they would never normally consider on their own it unlocks an entirely new level of confidence.

It proves that stepping outside your comfort zone isn’t just about fashion; it’s about claiming your space.
