Sharp Shoulders, Bold Statements: Unpacking the Power of Suiting

Power suiting, pinstripes and sharp shoulder with capes was how this year’s Met Gala attendees wore the theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”.

This year’s  show at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which also doubles as the Met Gala theme.

The dress code meanwhile was ‘Tailored for You’.

While the Greek myth of Narcissus inspired the blue carpet covered in daffodils, it was the story of the dandy that inspired the curation of the exhibition.

Attendees at the Met Gala reinterpreted the concept of dandyism, with power suiting style.

Dandyism in the context of the exhibition refers to “a cultural and historical examination of Black style over three hundred years through the concept of dandyism” Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Who wore what in black and white

Cool was brought to the show by Zendaya’s white suit together with a brimmed hat for a distinct 70’s vibe.

Meanwhile, Zoe Saldana’s white and black buttoned suit dress captures the common colour theme – black and white, while showing Thom Browne’s genius for turning the suit into a dress.

Everywhere there was stylish suiting to be found.

Whether it was Imaan Hammam’s structured white blazer with its nipped in waist and baggy pant and cane was a very stylish echo of the past.

Or, Coco Jones‘, Manish Malhotra floor length off-white single-breasted blazer and matching pants encrusted with bedazzlement.

These blazers stunningly evoking dandies with over the top fabulous power suit style.

Beyond that black and white outfits was Jamie Singer Soros in a stunning blue Sergio Judson creation. The matching gloves and clutch beautifully offset by a white and black shirt tie and hat combo.

Sabrina Carpenter delivered in a tailored leotard with tails in the hue burgundy.

In the same colour was Pusha T who wore a fabulous Louis Vuitton suit that had been blessed with a Tiffany & Co shower of sparkles across the power shoulders.

Menawhile, Lupita Nyong wore a stunning in an aquamarine Chanel suit.

Teyanna Taylor in perhaps the look of the night wore a Marc Jacobs grey pinstripe suit with red shirt and spectacular red cape.

All of which was not too much at all!

Also, in red from the men was Edvin Thompson.

Nontheless, Jeremy O. Harris stole the menswear show, in the epitome of dandy style.

Wearing pinstripes well was Emma Chamberlain, Keith Powers, BJ Gray, and in red, Alicia Keys.
