The Style Secret You Need: Understanding how to style your Proportions

Mastering how to style your proportions

One of the most powerful tools in our style toolkit? Understanding how to style your proportions.

It might sound technical, but it’s simply about understanding how different shapes, lengths, and volumes relate to each other (and to your unique body) to create a balanced and harmonious look.

Get it right, and you can subtly reshape your silhouette, highlight your favourite features, and instantly elevate your outfits.

Recently, I shared a quick video tip (you might have seen it on LinkedIn or Instagram!) demonstrating a fantastic way to create a subtle, modern hourglass shape.

It’s a perfect example of proportion play in action, and today, I want to dive a little deeper into why it works so well.

The Magic Formula: Balancing Volume & Definition

The look hinges on strategically combining pieces that add volume in some areas while defining others.

The specific combo I showcased involves:

styling your top half

  1. The Wider-Shoulder or Puff-Sleeve Jacket: Don’t be afraid of a little structure or volume up top! A jacket with a defined shoulder line (think a subtle shoulder pad or a well-cut blazer) or even a gentle puff sleeve broadens your shoulder visually. This is key because it starts to create the upper curve of the hourglass and provides a counterbalance to your lower body.
  2. The Cropped Length or Cut of the Top: This is crucial! Aim to have a cropped jacket end at or very near your natural waist – typically the narrowest part of your torso if wearing a low rise or midrise pant or if wearing a high rise pant the jacket length should meet at the at the waist of your jeans or pants. By hitting precisely at the waist defined by your high-waisted jeans, the cropped jacket visually cinches you in, creating that essential waist definition that’s central to an hourglass shape.
  • For this to work with a longer jacket it needs to be highly tailored and structured, with curved seams that create the shape, and a single button aligned to the waist of the pants. Other styles of jacket or blazer won’t have the same effect. They can emphasis the wider part of your hip or thigh, losing that nipped-in look.

styling your bottom half

  1. High-Waisted Jeans/Trousers: Starting your trousers higher up instantly elongates your legs and clearly establishes where your natural waist sits. This provides the perfect anchor point for the cropped jacket to work its magic.
    • If you are short waisted, try a high waist with belt loops at the top of your hips. Alternatively, a midrise or lower rise may be more flattering.
  2. Wide-Leg Silhouette: Pairing the defined waist and structured shoulder with a wide-leg jean or trouser completes the balance. The volume at the bottom mirrors the volume created by the shoulders, contributing to that classic hourglass X-shape. It ensures the look feels grounded and intentional, not top-heavy.

Why Does This Combination Work?

It’s all about visual flow and balance:

  • Creates Contrast: The wider shoulder and wider hemline contrast beautifully with the defined, nipped-in waist.
  • Draws the Eye: The crop point draws the eye directly to the waist, emphasising it. Add a belt to further enhance the effect.
  • Balances Volume: It cleverly distributes volume between the top and bottom, preventing the eye from getting stuck in one area and creating a pleasing overall harmony.

how to style your proportions: Making it Work for You!

The beauty of understanding this principle – balancing volume and defining your waist – is that you can apply it to countless other outfits! Think full skirts with fitted tops, belted dresses, or even strategically tucked shirts.
