Ask yourself these questions

Are you struggling with how to get more out of your wardrobe?

It can be a case of you ‘can’t see the wood for the trees’.

To help you unlock the full potential of your wardrobe we have developed an essential list of questions to ask yourself.

Questions to Ask To Get more out of your wardrobe

1. Identify Your Constraints

Ask yourself what constrains you when it comes to how you wear clothes.

Answering this question will help you to understand your limitations when it comes to how you style your clothes.

Recognise the rules you’ve set for yourself, whether it’s colour combinations, fabric types, or occasion-specific dressing.

By acknowledging your constraints, you can start to experiment with new combinations and styles.

2. Reevaluate Unworn Items

Carefully consider your clothes and ask why it is that you do not wear pieces often or at all.

Cull your closet of anything that doesn’t fit, is damaged, or no longer aligns with your style. That is the pieces about which you say when asked, Why don’t I wear this? ‘It’s just not me’.

Giving pieces a second chance: Try pairing items you haven’t worn in a while with different pieces in your wardrobe.

Do not be afraid to mix and match.

Try high and low; work and casual; and winter and summer items together.

Through a process of elimination, you might find unworn items have a perfect partner in your closet.

3. What do your pieces go with:

Review your ideas about what each piece of clothing goes with.

Think outside the box.

Experimentation is the key.

Consider how each item might be styled in multiple ways.

Experiment with different combinations to discover new favourites.

Challenge yourself to wear each piece at least three different ways.

For example:

  • Wear a business shirt with workwear, jeans and shorts or a casual skirt.
  • Try a blazer over a dress, with work pants, and with jeans.
  • Can a dress be worn as a jacket or over pants? Does it work it is worn as a top tucked in worn with a maxi skirt. How does it look worn with a jacket, cardigan or jumper or even a rugby style top.
  • Can a top be worn on its own or layered over a tank top or under another piece, like a jacket or jumper?

4. Don’t Let Quality Dictate:

Question your expectations about whether pieces of differing quality can be worn together

High-quality items can often be dressed down or up.

Don’t limit yourself based on fabric or construction.

Challenge your ideas about how and when to wear clothes of different quality using the method suggested in point 3.

5. Accepting styles evolve:

Delve into how the external environment is influencing what you wear

While a piece might still have life in it you find nonetheless that you have stopped wearing it.

Usually this is because your external environment messages it is out of style.

Classic pieces in this category are best to stored.

Alternatively, look for new ways to wear clothes or alter them, for example, by:

  • rasing of lowering hems.
  • removing a collar
  • updating or removing buttons.

Be open to updating your wardrobe to reflect current trends.

Great memories may live with beloved items, but it is ok to move these pieces on.
