Meta Gala 2023

Evening arrives in New York on 1 May and with it the fashion and costume show that is the Met Gala carpet.

This year’s Met Gala theme – “A Tribute to Karl” informs an event that is beautiful one moment and perfect the next.

The famous stairs to the Metropolitan Museum in New York play host to are some of the most photographed and discussed fashion and costume design.

This year the famous stairs did not boast a red carpet. The stairs feature a graphic design by Tadao Ando – designer of this year’s exhibition. “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”

With an oeuvre of over 50 years of fashion to draw on the line of beauty is long.

Most drew inspiration from the colours Karl wore – black and white. The stylings drawing on his years as the Creative Director of Chanel. This meant there was an opulence to the fashion as well as great beauty.

Naomi Campbell, Dua Lupa, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie wore vintage Chanel pieces. Margot Robbie wore a recreation of a Karl designed Chanel dress worn on the runway by Cindy Crawford.

The most stunning pieces came from fellow fashion designers who in following the theme and honouring Karl Lagerfeld created magic. Designers like Daniel Roseberry, Schiaparelli; Rodarte, Gucci; Simone Rocha and Tory Burch. Read about the looks that will inspire future brides here.
