A celebration of Karl Lagerfeld

In anticipation of May’s Met Gala whose theme is ‘In Honour of Karl’ which coincides with the opening of the New York Metropolitan Mueseum of Art Exhibition – ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, Anna Wintour commissioned for the May 2023 edition of Vogue ten of the late designer’s favourite designers to create looks that celebrate his legacy.

Beautifully shot by Annie Leibovitz, everything about the project, from its commissioning to its execution is a stunning evocation of and homage to Karl Lagerfeld.

The inspiration for the looks is drawn mainly from Lagerfeld’s time as a designer for Fendi, and Chanel. The looks could not be more different, but all have elegance and saviour faire, that speaks to the design aesthetic of Lagerfeld. The cohesion you experience when considering each look in part comes from the almost uniform referencing of black and white.

The weaving in of house codes from the designer’s own fashion houses has resulted in some of the most beautiful and moving looks you might ever expect to see on a red carpet.

Photographed in Paris’s Grand Palais the looks are worn by Karl’s ten favourite models.

Everyone involved in this project is to be congratulated on the result.
