Embracing normal

There is more than one style now

In the music industry there is more than one style now.

A new album from Beyonce presaged by a British Vogue cover shoot got me thinking about how ideas of female beauty and style are evolving.

When it comes to female musicians the focus is on the musician. An upshot of this is the music industry embracing normality.

Normal bodies are the new normal.

Think Beyonce, Billie Eilish, Lizzo and Adele.

It is no longer the case that you need to confirm to a narrow view of what a female musician must look like.

Beyonce’s July 2022 British Vogue photos spoke to an evolving sense of style. While Lizzo’s turn at the recent VMA’s in a Glenn Marten’s designed John Paul Gaultier couture dress suggested that designers that previously eschewed the creation of size inclusive fashion are starting to change.

More importantly these women are musicians first. Their ‘look’ is something that they are evolving to reflect their personalities. Female musicians also are firmly in control of their looks and how it reflects their brand.

In this context it is inspiring to see them not conform to a prescribed ideal look.

This change is as welcome as it is wonderful.
