Creating a capsule wardrobe
31 Mar 2022

Your climate will drive decisions

Starting a capsule wardrobe? It can help if you think about it seasonally.

Begin with the basics. Do you prefer trousers, skirts and/or dresses? Are there pieces you can wear year-round? This will be unlikely unless you live in the tropics.

A Summer capsule work wear wardrobe might start with a skirt and a pair of trousers. Opt for short sleeved t-shirt style tops – the Perri Cutten boat neck sleeveless t-shirt is perfect as it does not crease and does not need ironing. Wear these tops under a cotton cardigan or jacket. Try a wool crepe rather than linen jacket or blazer as it increases wearability and reduces ironing.

Capsule wardrobes invariable work better if they are based on block of colour that can be mixed and matched. A shirtwaist style dress is a good addition but will really only serve you one day a week. Trousers and skirts worn with a variety of tops will be more flexible when it comes to getting you through the working week.

For your casual looks repeat the approach to your work wear. Find your essential piece whether it’s a skirt or shorts and then build.

Taking a seasonal approach will see you repeat the approach above. Noting a wool crepe blazer is likely to work throughout the year if a coat is added when it gets colder.

Brands like CoS, Camilla and Marc, Saba, Portmans and Cue will all have the kind of separates that will help you build a functional and practical no fuss wardrobe. If you are after a bit more luxe try Carla Zampatti, Perri Cutten, Scanlon and Theodore and Hugo Boss. Gorman, Country Road, Trenery, Sportscraft and Witchery are good options for more casual looks.
