Pink Shock

Paris Fashion Week 2022 this year was overshadowed by the terrible situation in Ukraine.

During the week brands and designers responded on and off the runway to the horrors of the Russian invasion.

The most notable response coming from Balenciaga. The Balenciaga Creative Director, Demna Gvasalia who fled Georgia as a child refugee in 1993 presented a highly personal show that featured models moving through a seeming blizzard.

Brands that responded off the runway included YSL whose collection epitomised elegance. While the Givenchy jackets and coats hinted at a rediscovery of power dressing. Micro minis were back at Miu Miu. This time they had a preppie vibe – Ralph Lauren, where are you?

The Miu Miu micro mini has been the talking point of its recent collections amplified courtesy of the Nicole Kidman Vanity Fair cover. Of more interest to this fashionista were the jackets and coats that appeared with the skirts. Miu Miu like other designers played with volumes with the result you can expect to see fashion forward folk using structured and voluminous jackets and coats to redefine their silhouette.

Rick Owens offered a heavenly collection of looks that elongated the torso and created shoulders fit for angel wings. Tom Ford did not have a runway show but did drop a very luxe collection during it. This collection features bright red, pink and electric blue. The velevet pieces from this collection added to the luxe look of it.

pink shock – pp pink

Arguably, the star of the week was the Valentino collection from Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli. Valentino collaborated with Pantone to create an extraordinary bespoke pink. The outcome was pure genius. On the runway what followed 40 monochrome pink looks was 32 looks in black before the finale of a further 7 pink looks. Ironically, this somehow made Look 48 in black the look of the show.

Next time what as on the Final Runway of the Melbourne Fashion Fesitval.
